1 . Vacuum frequently and thoroughly. Most of the wear of carpeting is caused by dirt. Oily soils attract more oily soil and frequent vacuuming will reduce soil buildup.

2 . Get at stains quickly, 99% of all stains can be removed by one cleaning agent or another if they are cleaned in the first few days. The longer a stain chemically reacts with the carpet the harder it will be to remove it.

3 . Test carpet before scrubbing, extracting or spotting. All carpets are different. Some carpets are very sensitive to acid type cleaners and will lose their color quickly. Other carpet dyes are sensitive to harsh alkalis.

4 . Use appropriate spotters starting with the mildest. Do not use harsh spotting agents unless absolutely necessary and always neutralize high alkaline or high acid cleaners after use.

5 . Never dig or brush spots. The proper procedure is to scrape the spot towards the middle and then tamp the spot into the white towel or cloth using a brush or other tamping devices. A meat tenderizer makes a great tamping tool. www.steamcarpets.com  Burrell’s Carpet Cleaning, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.  453-3003

If you’re trying to combat the stain before calling in a pro, you can try removing it using household items you may already have in your cabinets. You’ll need: baking soda, vinegar, cold water and a few cleaning rags.

If the cat urine is not yet dry, blot the area with a damp rag, soaking up as much as possible. If it is dried, dampen the area with warm water.

Next, sprinkle baking soda onto the area. Cover the stained area completely, but don’t make a mound. Be sure to cover any outlying spots, as well.

Pour a small amount of vinegar onto the stain and let it soak into the carpet. Cover it with a plastic grocery bag, so that the vinegar can soak in without evaporating or being blotted up by a rag. After the vinegar has had time to soak in – usually about 20 to 30 minutes – use a clean rag soaked in cold water to scrub it up.

It may take a few applications of the solution to completely remove the smell. Be sure to vacuum the spot thoroughly to pick-up any left behind particles.

If that doesn’t seem to do the trick, get a ½ cup of warm water and 1 teaspoon of dish detergent. Mix the solution and pour it onto the stain. Use a sturdy rag or scrub brush to work it into the carpet in steady circular motions for several minutes. Wipe away any excess soap suds and allow the spot to air dry. If necessary, re-apply.

The dish detergent in this solution attacks the bacteria and enzymes that cause odors, so it can be especially effective on fresh urine stains. Soap, baking soda and vinegar act as natural carpet cleaners and are most useful for spot treatment. Carpet stains are an annoying and inevitable problem plaguing many homeowners. Regardless if the stains were caused by a pair of muddy shoes, a spilled glass of red wine or an over-excited pet, they always seem to find a way into carpets.

Fortunately, there are ways that you can remove these stains on your own. It all depends on where the stain came from, and the method used to remove it.

1. Dirt, grime and mud. Dirt and mud are some of the most common stains found in carpets, and fortunately, they are usually the easiest to remove. Allow the mud or dirt to dry thoroughly before you try to clean the spot.

Scrubbing the stain while it’s still wet can drive it deeper into the carpet. Once the stain is dry, you can use a vacuum to remove the dirt. Then use a damp terry cloth to scrub the area. Allow the area to dry once more and then vacuum again.

2. Pet stains. The hardest part of eliminating pet stains is getting rid of the odor. Soak the area thoroughly with a mixture of baking soda and water and then quickly press a towel into the area to absorb the moisture. Repeat the process until the stain and odor is gone.

3. Soda stains. Soda stains require immediate action due to their high acidic content. The acid loosens the fibers of the carpet and allows the stain to quickly settle in for a long stay.

Clean these spots immediately by absorbing all of the liquid with a heavy towel. Follow by scrubbing the area thoroughly with a mixture of dish soap and water.

4. Juice and wine stains. These stains can also be very damaging if they are left to settle in your carpet. Besides being dark in color, fruit-based liquids are also very acidic. Using a rag or towel, you want to soak up as much of the wine as possible, and then pour cold water over the stain to dilute it.

Then, apply the towel again to soak up the remaining water. Once you have diluted the stain, mix a paste of baking soda and water and allow it to dry over the stain. The paste should be vacuumed up once it has thoroughly dried. Assuming regular wear and tear, how often should I have my carpet cleaned?

Carpet is not as big of a germ trap as people believe, depending on how you use it.

For large families with pets, vacuum every other day. Otherwise, vacuum at least once a week in common areas and once a month under furniture and in hard-to-reach areas.

For pet stains, use a mixture of 50 percent water and 50 percent distilled white vinegar. The vinegar smell will dissipate after a while. You can also use pet enzyme carpet cleaners from pet stores.

Older polyester carpets are harder to clean, whereas, nylon is the easiest. The more stain resistant the carpet, the easier it is to clean. Always rinse the carpet with water after using cleaning products.

Professionally clean your carpet once a year for normal wear and tear. Also have oriental rugs professionally cleaned. We test them for color fastness and treat them differently.

Rental equipment does not have a way to soak up excess water, so trust professional equipment that does remove moisture from carpet, cleaning at temperatures between 230-240 degrees.

When searching for a carpet cleaning company, seek one with accreditation and a good reputation. Be careful of companies charging bargain basement prices. They may not have been properly trained to use the equipment.

Carpet cleaning looks easier than it really is. We ask that breakables be removed in order for us to safely move the furniture. If you have a pet, vacuum your carpet beforehand. A good vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter will reduce allergens, but you get what you pay for. I recommend the Dyson vacuum or an equivalent.

Coffee, tea or pop spills are the most persistent stains. If your carpet gets saturated with water, we do some carpet restoration, but it has a lot to do with how long the carpet has been wet and its age. The best thing to do in that case is to get a professional assessment on the carpet and the padding beneath it.

Oriental Rug CAre

Oriental rugs create an atmosphere of upscale beauty, artistry and elegance in your home that can’t be achieved with the average rug. Although these rugs set a high aesthetic standard, they also require a high standard of maintenance.

If you have been looking for ways to better maintain your Oriental rug, consider the following helpful tips:

1. Rotate regularly
Although some experts claim that you only need to rotate your rug every one to two years, it is usually best to shoot for rotating every one to two months, if the rug is located in a high traffic area. Doing so will allow for more evenly distributed wear, which will give your rug a more uniform look that will help maintain both appearance and value. Burrell’s Carpet Cleaning www.steamcarpets.com

2. Block sunlight
Over time, sunlight can cause the dye in your Oriental rug to fade dramatically. To prevent premature fading, you should always block sunlight from hitting the rug as often as you can. If this measure is impossible, you should make sure to rotate your rug as frequently as possible to ensure more uniform fading.

3. Flip the rug
Most Oriental rugs have fringes on the end that can become twisted and tangled very easily. It’s important that you avoid combing the fringe to release these tangles, since this can cause damage to the natural fibers of the fringe. Instead, flip the rug end over end to allow the fringe to straighten out more naturally.

This can be done by grabbing one end of the carpet and walking it over the other end. In addition to this process, you should also shake the rug gently to help straighten out the fringe.

4. Vacuum
Although all rugs will require vacuuming, it’s especially important that you regularly vacuum your Oriental rug to prevent the natural fibers from becoming packed down by excess traffic. It is usually best to turn off the beater bar when vacuuming your Oriental rug to prevent runs or tears in the delicate fibers.

5. Spot clean
Stains can easily develop if you don’t immediately spot clean a spill once it occurs. First, you should dab the stain with a dry cloth to soak up all excess liquid. Do not use soap, bleach, or other common cleaning products on your Oriental rug, since this can damage the fibers.

Instead, use only water to cleanse the stain. If water doesn’t remove the stain completely, it is best to consult a professional who specializes in cleaning Oriental rugs to ensure safe and effective removal of the stain.

6. Utilize padding
When you place padding beneath your Oriental rug, it helps to keep it stabilized, protect the shape of the rug, and reduce wrinkling. This not only enhances the value of the rug, but also makes them safer and more comfortable to walk on.

7. Change the pathway
To prevent overly wearing down one region of the rug, you should rearrange your furniture to create new pathways every six months or so. This will allow for more even wear, increasing the lifespan of the rug.

8. Wipe down
As a safer alternative to beating the rug, you can re-fresh the surface by wiping the rug down with a cloth or sponge that has been dampened with cold water. This will help remove any surface dust and restore the rug fibers for a freshly cleaned look.

9. Professional washing

Experts recommend having your Oriental rug professionally washed every three to five years to prevent dirt and soil buildup and to fully restore the rug’s natural fibers. With the help of a professional rug cleaner, you can extend the life of the rug and enjoy better comfort and quality throughout your use.

10. Air it out
Moisture buildup on your rug can have devastating effects in the form of mold and mildew growth. To prevent buildup and reduce the presence of odor, hang your Oriental rug out to dry outside for a few hours every six months, or every time your rug comes in contact with moisture.

Removing basic carpet stains

To remove a basic stain:

1. Immediately following a spill, remove any semi-solid material with a spoon and place a clean, white absorbent material such as paper towels, a kitchen towel, or a sponge over the spot and press to draw the liquid away from the carpet fibers. The idea is to blot, not scrub.

Scrubbing will spread the stain and drive it deeper into the material you’re trying to clean. As soon as the absorbent materials are wet, replace them with dry ones and weight them down with a heavy object. Replace them when they grow wet.

2. Apply a carpet cleaner directly to the stain. Ideally, you would first apply it to a small test spot in a less conspicuous part of the stain and leave on for 10 seconds. This will assure you if the cleaner is safe for your carpet.

3. You may need to treat the area more than once if it is an especially stubborn stain; some stains will never completely come out.

4. When the carpet is clean and has had a chance to dry, gently brush it to restore the carpet pile. www.steamcarpets.com

Other services from carpet cleaners

Having your carpets cleaned professionally is a great way to prolong the value and appeal of your home’s carpet – and  keep your home clean and fresh. But there are many other services a professional carpet cleaner company may be able to provide and some may even be offered at a discount if purchased with a regular carpet service.

Next time you’re thinking about getting your floor covering freshened up, consider these seven other services:

1. Tile and grout cleaning
Sweeping and mopping regularly will keep your floors clean, but dirt and other particles can still build up and discolor both tile and grout. Ask your carpet cleaning company about how they can clean kitchen, bathroom tile, and bathtub and shower tiles.

2. Furniture cleaning

Dust can settle on upholstery the same way it settles on floors and wooden furniture — but dust mites, pet dander, pet stains and other allergens, can also work their way into your upholstery.

Vacuuming your sofa and chairs may not do the job, but a professional cleaner can remove the buildup and make your furniture look and smell as good as the day you bought it.

3. Air duct cleaning
Although no scientific study had proved it conclusively, some people with year-round allergies say having their home’s air ducts cleaned may reduce the amount of allergens in the air.

Most air ducts don’t need to be cleaned routinely — but if your house is older, has undergone significant renovations, or shows signs of dust buildup around ducts and registers, a cleaning may be worth the price.

4. Flooring refinishing
Some carpet cleaning companies also offer hardwood floor refinishing services. Properly done, refinishing a hardwood floor can improve its appearance and preserve its value, as well as protect the wood from future damage or deterioration.

5. Area rugs
If your house has area rugs, chances are they get as much traffic as your carpet or hardwood floors. Having your area rugs cleaned professionally ensures that they’ll be cleaned with care — an important measure for expensive, treasured or delicate rugs.

6. Vehicle cleaning
Spending time in your car every day will inevitably lead to spills, stains and other dirt buildup. Deep cleaning the floors and upholstery in your car will not only make it look and smell fresher, but it can also help extend the life of your vehicle and preserve its resale value.

You should clean it when it looks dirty. Some of my customers clean their carpets every three months, and some do it every five years. I suggest vacuuming once or twice a week, depending on whether you have pets. To remove pet stains, some customers use a mixture of half distilled vinegar and half water. Although it will make your house smell like vinegar for a short while, it will equalize the high pH in pet urine and kill the stain.

I also trust Biokleen’s Bac-out, found in high-end grocery stores, which also works well on pet stains. As for pet hair, almost all new vacuums come standard with the High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) allergen-reducing filters. Cost doesn’t make a difference. Keep your vacuum filter clean, and your vacuum unplugged when not in use.

Hiring a professional to clean your carpet is less strain on your back! A steam-cleaning machine may take a homeowner five hours to use. It only takes me about 90 minutes, and costs $120. If you’re going to do it yourself, the trick is not to put the detergent right into the home cleaning machine. Instead, pour it into a clean, empty spray bottle and spray it directly on the carpet. Then use a push broom to work the detergent into the carpet fibers. (It’s like pre-soaking your dishes and then rinsing them off).

Then, you put a mixture of hot water and one cup of distilled vinegar into the machine and go over the carpet a few times. Make sure to cover it at least once with no solution to soak up any extra moisture. This process works to keep dirt from sticking to the detergent over time. It’s as close to a professional cleaning as you can get. For water-damaged carpet, I suggest hiring a professional who can handle mold, or ripping out the carpet and replacing it. It’ll cost you about the same. Burrell’s Carpet Cleaning

Nice oriental rugs should be cleaned by oriental rug professionals who shampoo them by hand, ring them out and hang them up to dry. That can cost between $2-$4 a square foot. I suggest only buying nylon carpets. Acrylic carpets are made from recycled plastic and are stain resistant, but traffic patterns will crush the carpet within its first year. Scotchgarding is a waste of time on polyester/plastic carpets, since it can’t penetrate the fibers. It’s a gimmick.

Nylons are the only carpets you should Scotchgard. Wool carpets wear the best, but they have to be cleaned differently, and it’s not worth the extra cost. For regular carpet cleaning, I charge by the room. If a customer vacuums the carpets first and moves smaller items and furniture out of the way before I arrive, the overall cost will be cheaper. The best time to call is now through early spring. It’s our slow season.
